If you are a veteran claiming disability through the Office of Veteran's Affairs, and are a pilot with a valid medical, you may have received a deferrment letter simular to the one below.
Keep in mind, this is a deferrment, not a suspension. Your medical is still valid until the date listed in the letter. If it is a suspension or revocation, you will receive a seperate letter from FAA legal stating that.
There is specific criteria on the back of your letter. If you meet any of those criteria, you should ground yourself until this issue is resolved.
What can you do about this? What is the Process?
1. Receive letter from FAA
2. Hire “Wingman Med” https://wingmanmed.com (https://wingmanmed.com)
a. Consult
b. Send what things need to be disclosed with FAA
c. Complete Wingman Med MedXpress Simulator
d. Complete and obtain paperwork and appointments that wingmen med asks you to obtain in your own personal Action Plan
e. Always use the doctors they say and make sure it is a HIMS (Human Interventional Motivation Study) doctor if they say it is needed for that report (FAA Approved Doctor)
f. Send completed documents with name and FAA applicant ID on all documents to wingmen med electronically for them to review
g. Ask which AME you should use
3. Complete new MedXpress application
a. You have to put information and be detailed about items in comment boxes
4. Schedule appointment with AME (Aviation Medical Examiner)
a. AME cannot approve you, only the FAA Medical Review Board can
b. After giving AME documents electronically beforehand this makes it easier on AME
c. AME at appointment will have to send off documents to FAA
5. After a week, the FAA Review board should have your electronic documents for review
a. This would be a great time to email and call them at those contact points at the end of your FAA Letter to plead your case. There should be an email contact that you are given, but here is one if you don’t have it: 9-AVS-AAM-Special-Project@faa.gov and (405)666-1055 (Use the contacts listed on your letter)
b. If you’re a professional pilot, let them know it’s your career and you’re out of work until completed. Explain the effects on the community in your absence if you are airline pilot or HAA “EMS” Pilot. Let them know that you aren’t a weekend warrior and that way they may expedite your review
